There ‘s Still Time! Register for Virtual Action for Distraction 5k by May 9
This weekend is an exciting one for BeneFIT Physical Therapy! We are one of the sponsors once again of this year’s 8th Annual Action for Distraction 5k. BeneFIT PT will be leading a stretch for participants on the day of the originally scheduled event, Saturday May 9,2020 at 9am. The NJ Devils, another race sponsor, will be also contributing virtually to the Virtual “Opening Ceremony ” on race day.
Since the race is virtual, runners can partipate anytime and anywhere! Registered participants have until May 17th at midnight to submit their results and complete the 5k. 💻 🕛 🗓 This will allow people to social distance and stagger start times and start dates whether they choose to do the USATF trail in the Loantaka Brook Reservation (see map below), another park of their choosing or completing the 3.1 miles on their treadmill at home. The Rice Family is SO greatful that NJ Governor Phil Murphy has reopened NJ parks just in time for this! 👍😎 However if you do decide to complete the 5k outside, please remember to practice social distancing!
Haven’t registered yet? No worries; there still is time! “The registration deadline is May 9th (aka: Race Day)! We also do in fact have a Facebook, it is Action For Distraction 5K. The 5K usually takes place on the beautiful trail in Loantaka Brook Reservation,” explained Shannon Rice. “We usually get around 400-500 people at our event in years past.” Shannon Rice, along with the rest of the Rice Family, Dave, Zach and McKenzie, are working hard behind the scenes to make the 8th Annual Action for Distraction 5k the best it can be, going with the flow of current events by turning the event into a Virtual 5k. 🌟🏅
To participate, a $25 entry fee is needed. You can register here.
Since it’s so close to the race date, official race T-shirts are sold out, as they go the first 250 people that registered, but you will still get your race bib and medal mailed to you. You are also helping donate to the Goryeb Children’s Hospital. The majority of the proceeds goes to the hospital, Rice explains: “We are a non-profit, so we only cover the cost of the event and donate the rest of the money.” Additionally, for every person registered, Mackenzie Rice is crocheting ear savers for Morristown Medical Center. With the hundreds of registrants already, she has been quite busy crafting!
Tips for new or returning runners can be found on Action for Distraction’s website and BeneFIT PT’s “Couch to 5k” blog series. Rice also endorses BeneFIT PT’s “Couch to 5k” Series, “For tips on getting used to the virtual 5K, I would definitely suggest hitting up your Couch to 5K plan! Also, I would like to say that wearing the Action For Distraction bib and t-shirt that come in the runner packets is actually scientifically proven to make you run or walk faster.” To read the latest post from BeneFIT’s Couch to 5k series click here.
Shannon Rice has so many great memories of the Action for Distraction in years past, such as, “when Grant Marshall, an alumni of the New Jersey Devils comes out to the event, because he just brings a huge amount of energy to the table that just makes the whole day so much fun. Also, we love our tradition of the Mobile Gaming Truck being there because that is something we have had since year one, it just reminds us of our roots.” The inside of the Mobile Gaming Truck is pictured below.
What motivates the Rice Family to continue this event every year?Shannon Rice described that motivation as stemming from “literally any of our “Faces of the Race” and just the amount of people that are supporting them. We always highlight them at the event and being able to look out the the crowd, knowing that this one person is being celebrated by hundreds of people is just incredible
!” (See image below explaining the “Faces of the Race.” ) Last year Morristown High School student Stephen Murray was 2019’s “Face of the Race.” The 2020 selection has yet to be annonced.
When you register for the 2020 Action for Distraction Virtual 5K, know you are donating to a good cause. Then enjoy the fresh air wherever you decide to run, jog or walk your 5K route! ☀️🏃♂️🏃♀️🏅🌟😎
