The shoulder joint is the most mobile joint in our bodies. As a result the shoulder is principally stabilized, not by a bunch of bones, but by a number of muscles and ligaments that meld together to form a strong joint capsule.

However, typically through some combination of weakness in our rotator cuff muscles, poor posture, repetitive motions, and/or trauma we can injure our shoulders creating pain and decreasing mobility.  There are a number of diagnoses specific to the shoulder; all of which can create pain and limit the ability to participate in certain activities making it difficult to perform even the simplest tasks. Sometimes the pain can be nagging, just at the end of our range of motion, so that we don’t think too much about until we find we can’t raise our hands up to wash our hair, like in adhesive capsulitis (commonly referred as frozen shoulder). It can be a sharp pain whenever we move our arm quickly like in a shoulder impingement. Or it can be something in between.
