Many of us know that deep breathing is good for our health, but how exactly does it work? Deep breathing works to calm us by sending a signal to the brain that tells it to relax. Then, the brain activates the parasympathetic nervous system which is our “rest and digest” response. Activation of the parasympathetic nervous systems tells our body that there is no danger and we do not need to be on high alert. The body then responds by increasing our resting and relaxation processes. In summary, taking a moment to practice deep breathe can help refocus and restart your day!
Mindful breathing can:
- Slower heartbeat
- Increase airway diameter
- Lower or stabilize blood pressure
- Increase decision making

Writing positive affirmations
Affirmations are positive thoughts you come up with and repeat to change your mental status. Sometimes putting something positive into the universe can help your brain believe it is true. Affirmations work to support, encourage and calm your brain and body. You may chose to write or speak your affirmations. They are usually powerful positive statements that you want to manifest. For example, you can write “I will be successful” or “I am strong”. These powerful statements can challenge negative, depressing or anxious thoughts. Affirmations can be used to influence your way of thinking, outlook and help improve your day!
